Cookie Policy

This Cookie Policy explains what cookies and similar technologies we use on architecturedesignaward.eu (the “Site”) operated by the European Architecture Design Award (“EADA”, “we”, “our”), how they work, and how you can control them. It applies to the public website; the submission platform at architecturedesignaward.eu/submit/ is covered by a separate notice.

A cookie is a small text file stored on your device when you visit a website. We also use browser localStorage, which serves the same purpose without being sent to a server on every request. In this policy, “cookies” means both.

We categorise cookies into two groups: necessary (always active, no consent required) and advertising (opt-in only).

These are required for the Site to function. You cannot disable them without breaking basic behaviour such as remembering your cookie choice.

• ads-awards-cookie-choice — a browser localStorage entry that records whether you accepted or rejected advertising cookies on this Site. Stored in your browser, never sent to us. Persists until you clear your browser storage.

No personal data is collected via necessary cookies.

We use the Meta Pixel (a service provided by Meta Platforms Ireland Limited, 4 Grand Canal Square, Dublin 2, Ireland) to measure the effectiveness of our advertising on Facebook and Instagram and to show relevant EADA ads to visitors who have shown interest in the award.

When it loads: only after you click “Accept” on the cookie banner. If you reject or close the banner without accepting, the Meta Pixel is not loaded and no data is sent to Meta.

What is collected:

• Page URL and referrer
• Browser type, language, screen resolution
• IP address (used by Meta for approximate location and immediately discarded per Meta’s policy)
• A pseudonymous Meta browser cookie (_fbp) so Meta can recognise the browser across pages
• An event marker when you land on the submission platform (“Lead” event) so we can build a retargeting audience of people who considered submitting

Data controller: Meta acts as an independent data controller for the data it receives via the Pixel. See Meta’s Data Policy and Cookie Policy for how Meta processes this data.

Retention: Meta retains Pixel data for up to 180 days by default. The _fbp cookie in your browser expires 90 days after your last visit.

Transfers outside the EU: Meta processes data in the United States and other countries under Standard Contractual Clauses approved by the European Commission.

You can withdraw or change your cookie consent at any time:

1. Reset via your browser: Clear the site’s local storage in your browser’s privacy settings. On your next visit the banner will reappear.
2. Block via browser controls: All modern browsers let you block third-party cookies globally or per site. See Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge.
3. Opt out of Meta ads directly: Adjust your ad preferences at facebook.com/adpreferences or use the Your Online Choices tool.

Rejecting advertising cookies does not prevent you from using any part of the Site. All submission and browsing features work identically with cookies rejected.

Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and comparable regulations, you have the right to access, rectify, erase, or restrict the processing of your personal data, and to object to processing based on legitimate interests. You may also lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time to reflect changes to the technologies we use or to legal requirements. Material changes will be highlighted on the Site and, where required, we will ask for your consent again.
